It is important because it spiciness up the story. In order escape his wife, he would take his gun and his pet dog Wolf, and go hunting up high in Catskill Mountains. Shots after shots Rip grew more exhausted so, he laid down. He finally decided to get up to go back home. On his way home he noticed couples of men down the hill playing, and drinking their rum. It seemed like fun so he joined them. While playing a few games and drinking he grew more drunker and drunker. Until, it lead him into passing out. He woke up one sunny morning and reached out for his gun but noticed the barrel was rusted.All of the men were gone. The objects surrounding him seemed a bit odd. He looked for his dog but, he couldn't find him. Dumbfounded, he returned to his village but didn't recognize anyone. Everyone looked odd to him, they were all dressed in strange attire. The village was larger and there were buildings he had never seen or heard of. When walked to his house, he saw a old deteriorating house with broken and collapsing windows. With all the confusion he walked to Nicholas Vedder’s Inn but, it wasn't there. The men and the other villagers looked at him strange because he had on odd clothing and a long beard. A group of men found him suspicious so they approached and asked whether he voted or if he was here to start a riot. Rip told them “I am just poor quite man, a native of the place, and a loyal subject of the king
