Many people may also argue that competing in sports is not necessary. In 2015 Darrin Steele wrote a blog called, “Why Make Room in Sports for Kids with Developmental Disabilities?” This is a question that can twist the mind into a knot, because it is not something that is widely talked about in society. Based on the personal experiences for Steele, it is evident that his opinion is strongly reliable. Steele talks about how his son has autism and stresses how important it is to remind his son of his strengths and to be positive of the skills in which his son contains. He also explains how everyday people emphasize to his son on his struggles and weaknesses, but things should not be that way. A positive approach is important for his son’s confidence and to not always be reminded of the differences that separate him from others. Though his son is very fortunate to attend a school that is very welcoming, Steele feels that it is apparent to include his son in physical activities such as sports. He feels that sports help to remind his son on his improvements and is a place for him to fully express himself and to excel. Because every kid deserves to feel like they belong somewhere. Sports are uniquely capable of offering this to kids who have more challenges than solutions, more questions than answers, and more places where they don’t belong than those where they do. In short, because everyone wins. (Steele, 2015)
This is an emotional statement that really grasps the idea of including young kids with developmental disabilities into sports. The Washington Ice Dogs relates to this because it is an organization that is best suited for people such as Steele and his
