This Bridge Called My Back – Writings by Radical Women of Color is a collection of poems, essays, speeches, and various other documents written by women of color in order to explore their ideas and opinions on feminism, sexism, and racism. The authors put forth several ideas that are still relevant today, over thirty years after the book was originally published. One concept, created by Cherrie Moraga, is “theory in the flesh.” Moraga wanted to look at women’s real-life experiences, bring these women together to form a powerful group, and actively confront contradictions associated with women of color feminism. Bridge uses this concept by presenting women of color’s personal experiences, deep thoughts, and untouched feelings, even if they contradict…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. Most times the people that students meet are students that they would never talk to or become friends with on a normal basis. A 2001 survey of more than 50,000 high school students in Minnesota published in the March 2003 issue of the Journal of School Health found that those who participated in extracurricular activities had higher levels of social, emotional, and healthy behavior than students who did not participate (Francisco). Kevin chose to jump from the bridge to escape his mental disorder of bipolar, but he claims he regretted it as soon as he left the edge. He could not stop himself after committing to the jump, he just must have faith that he would survive the two-hundred-and-twenty-foot jump. The Golden Gate Bridge is easily accessed and free, which is what has made it the top suicide place in the world ever since its opening in 1937 “5 Most Notorious Suicide Spots on Earth”.…
