Since 9/11, security at airports around the world has increased dramatically, with metal detectors, x-ray scanners, and many other technologies to help keep countries safe. However, it can also be a huge waste of time, such as how you can’t carry more than 100mL of cologne in your carryon bag, or how they measure your nail clippers and nail file since they could be a “threat” to national security. The most recent addition too many airports in the U.S. is a machine called the Backscatter X-Ray. It’s a very controversial machine that allows the person watching it to see through your clothes, which is a big invasion of privacy and has sparked much debate about whether or not it should even be legal.[5] Since 9/11, a lot of money that could have been used for other important things like helping combat poverty, debt reduction, or the environment, has been used in an effort to improve the national security of Canada so that an attack like 9/11 doesn’t happen here.…

1,200 non-citizen Muslims were detained, arrested, and deported or released on bail based upon unsubstantiated tips from neighbors or coworkers and upon their religion, ethnicity and gender (Paul 1). However, none of these people were charged with any acts of terrorism after being held for 80 days. The detainees Were often not told what they were held for, did not have attorneys and could not communicate to their families. The practice of racial profiling picked up significantly after 9/11 with Muslims. Often after being pulled out of line for a “Random” Screening based upon ethnic appearance, Muslims had to leave the plane because the other passengers did not feel safe with a person they considered harmful based solely upon their appearance and names.(Paul 2).…

The article “What It Means to Be a Muslim Woman in Today's America” by Reem Nasr, explores what it’s like to be Muslim in America at this current age. It shows how women are questioned for their clothing and their religion. The article also informs the reader how people badmouth muslims by grouping them with terrorist even though they have no evidence to back their statements up. At this age, many muslims go through so much work just to integrate with society by working while at the same time doing their best to ignore discrimination from society. I have seen that both muslims and latinos such as myself are always being discriminated by those who think that they are better than us.…

The increase in terrorist attacks and news articles headlined ISIS, promotes the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists. Living in this biased, Caucasian community, Amal is constantly discriminated for wearing the hijab, and for following her religious practices; unfortunately, her unwavering determination to uphold her religious identity backfires when she is refused a part-time job at a local restaurant for wearing the hijab. Consequently, incidents like this work towards lowering Amal’s self-esteem and making her question her decision-making skills. To add on, Amal’s high school bullying experiences work towards demoting her self-worth. One day during class, Tia says to Amal, loudly so everyone can hear it, “there’s this article in Marie Claire about Muslim girls getting circumcised in Nigeria” (171).…

Following the events that occurred on September 11, 2001, Muslims have been subjected to the vile stereotype that projects all Muslims as terrorists. In Brent Staples’ essay “Just Walk on by: Black Men and Public Space,” he argues that black men are victimized because of society's perception of them. This can be compared to the victimization of Muslims due to society’s image of them as well; however, this stereotype is incorrect based on statistics, evidence, and my personal experience. In this society, the argument is that the actions of Muslim terrorists come from their religion.…

Homes, businesses, mosques and Muslim schools have been vandalized, children tormented, and students harassed on college campuses. Outside of the regular hate crimes perpetrated by the people of the American public, the US government started racially profiling potential terrorists based on “Arab” features. The treatment of women in fundamentalist religions The treatment of women in the Middle East is barbaric, unjust and unthinkable. In Afghanistan alone “87 percent of women report having experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage”.1 In the Middle East women are seen as unequal in comparison to men just because they are born a female and are seen not to have the mental capacity of that of a man. The Quran itself has many conflicting ideas on the treatment of women. However, the Quran was written around 610AD so it has to be taken into consideration the fact that the attitudes and status of women back then was not the way it is today.…

Yet the media did not report this underlying fact” (Balkaran). In 2001 the nation was struck with a horrendous devastation that not only people feared but used as an excuse to discriminate against minorities. This started an onset of racial profiling of Muslims, Arabs, South Asians, or any Middle Eastern with dark skin. The media not only prolonged this racial profiling that was going on in airports, newspapers, businesses and etc., but increased it because they themselves were doing it. Nasir Almasri an American Muslim said “unfortunately, the media and the general public still ask American Muslims and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) how they are responding to the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks … as though we were affected any differently, as though we were watching the events from the outside” (Almasri).…
