Was Truman Dropped The Atomic Bomb Justified

Decent Essays
Atomic bombs Truman could have prevented dropping bombs on Japan and tried other methods. Truman should have negotiated as much as possible. Try to come to agreement that will benefit both sides equally. Another method could have been to take out the bigger people like the emperor and the army that was the strongest. This method would have made Japan weaker and have no choice but to surrender. Another method that they could have used was use the bomb to intimidate Japan. Maybe drop the bomb in a place that won't harm them but do scare them enough to know the United States has more power. Truman was justified when he dropped the bombs because he was trying to save lives. Truman knew that Japan would not surrender and didn't

With over 200,000 casualties due to his mindset, he failed to account for the other opportunities he had to guarantee America’s success in the war. Other alternatives that could have been substituted for the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki include receiving assistance from the Soviet Union, intensifying existing war strategies and compromising on Japan’s capitulation. With all these in mind, President Truman had no right to put atomic bombs to use on the Japanese population. It is a shame that Harry Truman missed all these opportunities to end World War Two earlier than it did just because he saw it more fit to drop atomic bombs on a civilian population. This does not justify his actions though as mankind can never unseal the great magnitude of nuclear…

DBQ: Dropping the Atomic Bomb on Japan The decision President Truman had to make regarding dropping a fission bomb onto Japanese cities in order to end the war would have been too hard for most of us to handle. America was weary after 4 years of almost total war with Germany, Italy, and Japan and the war needed to end. At this point, Japan was alone and dragging its feet after many losses. From the history we know, the decision was justified as it ended a devastating war with no end in sight and it saved more lives than were lost.…

The use of a second atomic bomb was because Japan did not surrender after the first. This is why the option to only demonstrate the atomic bomb to Japan would not have worked (Document E). A demonstration would not have brought Japan to the bitter end like the two bombs being dropped on their cities did. The other options presented to Truman included a mainland invasion as well as a blockade combined with traditional bombing.…

It had appeared that the Japanese were not going to surrender the way America wanted them to. Of course a big reason why the bomb was used is that if Japan would have been invaded, the death toll could have potentially reached half a million or more instead of the hundreds of thousands that were killed by the atomic bomb. It is said that if the war had continued the amount of American lives lost could have greatly diminished the amount that was killed by the bombs. It is hard to tell what could have really happened but it is certain that if the war had continued so would the loss of…

As stated previously, the United States’ objective was to obliterate Japan with their military power in order to make them surrender from the war, “Only the complete destruction of her military power could open way to lasting peace” (Document #3). At this point in the war, Japan was already in a devastated state due to the wrath of incendiary bomb raids and shortages in food. To push them over the edge into “waving the white flag”, the atomic bombs were necessary so that the Japanese could not be able to continue their fight and finally put an end to the entire war. Therefore, resulting in a win for the…

The Japanese people should have told the president what was really going on that they shouldn’t be bombing Japan. Truman should have declared the war differently if he wanted the war to end. There wasn't a better option than using the bomb, and the biggest problem with the alternative options was the fact that they're guaranteed to not work. Blockades, invasions, surrender terms, or even negotiations are considered too costly and will take far too long, and with Japan's stubborn social values, wouldn't even work. A demonstration of the bomb wouldn't show how much damage it has the potential of causing and would make Japan believe that America would not be willing to use the weapon to take human lives. Besides, the showcase of the bomb's destructive power prevents other countries from starting a war with America because they too might be potentially hit…

Truman saw that by ending this war, it would not only save American lives, but also Europeans, Indians, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Chinese lives. In fact, according to Newman’s essay Dropping the Bomb was Necessary and Justifiable “ Harry Truman ordered the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki primarily to end the war as soon as possible and save lives”(Newman,414). However, I believe it is important to understand that it was not just Truman’s decision to drop the bomb. In fact the Interim Committee was put together for the purpose of supporting Truman with making decisions regarding the atomic bomb. In a primary document of recommendation the Interim Committee suggests the combat use of the bomb against Japan.…

During WWII, the Americans and the Japanese were enemies, battling against each other, hoping the other would surrender. Because America wanted to rise as victorious, President Truman was in favor of using the bomb as a mean to establish American superiority. President Truman used the Pearl Harbor attack as a tactic to rationalize bombing Japan. He believed that the US should strike back at Japan because of the hardships the Japanese brought to the US. He insisted on attacking with atomic bombs and without any forewarning to force the Japanese to surrender.…

The United States government, along with a few others, were the first to witness the destruction caused by the atomic bomb after the success of the Manhattan project on July 16, 1945. However, less than a month later, on August 6, the rest of the world also witnessed the power of atomic energy with the bombing of Hiroshima. Only three days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and the combined casualties from the two bombs is uncertain, but are estimated to be close to two hundred thousand. President Truman violated the rights of noncombatants, thousands of everyday women, men, and children were killed for no other reason than to shock the Japanese government. Japan was not prepared for the intense, and rather ruthless, efforts shown by the United States to end the war.…
