Was the United States Justified in going to war with Mexico? Mexico finally became a free country after a long fight with Spain for freedom. After winning this war Mexico's government gained many lands including what now is Texas, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Mexico didn't have many settlers in their northern lands so they started welcoming settlers from united states. united sate settlers were encouraged to settle in Texas. Mexico then realized a little too late that letting Americans move into Texas was a bad idea. Mexico was a catholic country, they didn't believe in slavery and wanted to keep Texas under their rule. Texas ignored their authority and ended up going to war with Mexico. In 1836 Texas finally won their independence.
