If you started a fight for no apparent reason, are you justified to continue fighting? The Mexican- American War was a brutal war that started in 1836 and killed thousands of people on both, the American and Mexican, sides. The question often asked about this war is “Was America’s reason to go to war with Mexico valid?” According to me, the United States did not have a substantial reason to go to war with Mexico because of multiple reasons. First off, Texans did not follow Mexican government rules. Secondly, America will not be able govern Texas if Mexico was powerless to do so. However Texans disobeyed their laws becoming one of the reasons for the Mexican- American war. “Slaveholders crossed the Sabine [river between Louisiana and Texas] with their slaves, in defiance of the Mexican ordinance of freedom. This quote is from “Objections to the Mexican- American War” written by Charles Sumner is an example of the multiple laws Texans broke in Mexican territory. It describes how Texans brought slaves to the land Mexican gave them when Mexico had previously banned slavery. The United States was not justified to war because of their defiance to Mexican laws.
American is not capable of governing Texas. “Imbecile and distracted, Mexico never can exert any real government authority over such a country.” This citation is from John L. O’ Sullivan’s “Annexation”. Although it shows how Mexico is said to be irresponsible and unable to govern Texas, others may interpret is as any big country is unable to govern a larger area such as Texas. But this thought raised the question, “If Mexico is impotent to rule Texas, how will America be able to?” I believe the war was unnecessary because either nation will be unable to rule
