Are you a supporter or a critic? Every war the United States has participated in there has followers and it’s opposition. The two-year Mexican-American War was greatly disputed. The war was ultimately started because of the disagreement over the territory between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River. The Mexican government opened fire on the United States trying to defend their land and the war broke out like wildfire. Were there justifications to support the United States going to war with Mexico? The United States was absolutely not justified in going to war with Mexico because the US had no right to annex Texas, President Polk started the war, and US citizens were expanding the unjust practice of slavery to Texas.
To begin with, the Mexican War was not justified because the United States had no right to annex Texas. According to Jesus Velasco-Marquez from “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” he states that “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons. According to President James Polk in Washington on May 11, 1846 “I had ordered an efficient military force to take a position” between the Nueces and the Del Norte (Rio Grande). However, according to Jesus Velasco-Marquez from “A Mexican viewpoint on the war with the United States,” the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the order, meaning the territory located between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River. The evidence also shows the US was not justified in going to war with Mexico because the US advanced on Mexican territory but was upset that the Mexican government fought back because the territory between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River was actually a Mexican

This week’s readings discusses different aspects of the Mexican war. In “Mexican Views of the Mexican-American War discusses the origin of the war between Mexico and the United States, it states “To explain then in a few words the true origin of the war, it is to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it”, the weakness that it’s referring to is the Mexican government. Like we discussed on Thursday, Mexico has always had a chaotic government that contributed the loss of Mexican land. It can be lead to think that if Mexico had a secure government, the loss of the land wouldn’t have happened. Mariano Otero’s “Considerations Relating to the Political and Social Situation of the Mexican Republic in the Year 1847” relates to the previous reading because he explains the Mexican government and weak army contributed to the loss of…

The Mexican War began after Mexico and America reached a breaking point with each other. Tensions rose when America and Mexico could not decide on a border for Texas. Mexico believed the border was the Nueces River, but America believed the border was the Rio Grande River, this event, along with others, caused the war. The U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico. One reason is the people of Mexico did nothing, and America only wants to go to war so they can add another slave state to the union, and because they are hungry for more land.…

The United States was unjustified in going to war with Mexico because Americans abused the idea of the Manifest Destiny, broke the laws the Mexican government had set, and the annexation of Texas was used as “a declaration of war (Doc. C, paragraph 2)” by Mexico. The Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was to stretch its borders from coast to coast. President Polk was a strong believer in Manifest Destiny. Mexico was just another obstacle in his way. He believed that Mexico was “hampering our power, limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence…

In document A, John L. O’Sullivan stated that, “... Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence (God) for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because the U.S.’s population increases every year, and they need more land to provide homes for the new families. A third reason the Mexican War was justified was because the Mexicans provoked America first. In document B, James Polk stated in his war message that, “... Mexico has passed the boundaries of the U.S., has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.”…

Document B is a war message by President James Polk on May 11 , 1846. Document B states “Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States , has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil.” President James Polk is saying that Mexicans invaded America’s territory and killed or wounded Americans. This justifies the United States in going to war with Mexico because Mexicans have killed Americans in their own territory , which is clearly a way of Mexico telling America that they want to battle…

The United States was not justified going to war with mexico because America just wanted more land, they wanted land due to Manifest Destiny. Americans thought it was a god given right to all of the land in North America, but this meant taking away land from other countries that needed that land more(Doc. C,A, and intro).Americans and Mexicans also couldn’t agree on the border, this could be seen by the president at the time,James Polk, putting forces on what they thought were still on American soil but Mexico thought this of the armed forces being put on their land and after the Mexicans asked them to leave they attacked the Americans, killing 16 Americans, and they went to war (Intro,Doc B,C).America was not justified going to mexico because they just wanted land, this is seen by Americans thinking it was a right to land and not agreeing on the border.…
