I believe this is a difficult question to answer considering the fact that its always easier to look back and see how things could have been changed. On the other hand, during that time, the Cold War was inevitable because both countries had different political ideas and economic systems that they wanted to influence other European countries. Although it was inevitable, there were numerous ways for both countries to figure things out to prevent it from being as bad at it was. The United States and the USSR had always had problems and never liked each other, despite being allies against Germany and Japan during the war.
