In this essay I am going to talk to you about what happened in the American civil war and why. The American civil war started on 12 April 1861 and finished on 9 May 1865. The argument over whether slavery was the main cause of the civil war is one of the most controversial topics in American History. What people believe is that the cause of the civil war was a dispute about the morality of slavery that caused the southern states to seperate but in reality it was the economic and political issues of slavery that really played a part in the outbreak of the American civil war. While plantation workers enjoyed new freedoms, slaves in Virginia's urban areas often experienced the exact opposite. Slaves were generally allowed a day off on Sunday, and on infrequent holidays such as Christmas or the Fourth of July. slave in North Carolina was incredibly difficult. Slaves, especially those in the field, worked from sunrise until sunset. The diet supplied by slaveholders was generally poor, and slaves often supplemented it by tending small plots of land or fishing. Many slaves lived in small stick houses with dirt floors, not the log slave cabins often depicted in books and films.

Others felt that it made the north seem more aggressive in its anti-slavery views and contributed to southern resentment, which may have led to the Civil War occurring sooner.
