William Shakespeare was their oldest living child, as they had two daughters that did not live beyond infancy. He had three brothers and two sisters. William’s father John was a prosperous business person, he was a glove maker, a craftsman, he sold wool and traded general goods and products needed for farming. He married Mary Arden, she came from a prominent family, and with this marriage he gained land. With his financial success he was able to but a house on Henley Street, and eventually this became William’s home. John became an alderman and the bailiff, which mean he was the mayor for Stratford. They were upstanding citizens which meant Shakespeare attended Stratford’s grammar school. The school focused on Latin classics, including memorization, writing, and acting classic Latin plays. Shakespeare most likely finished school at the age of fifteen. John Shakespeare abruptly withdrew from the bailiff position, and no one has ever figured out why. There is little to no evidence of him between 1585 and 1592, this period is often called the lost years. “A type of mythology has developed around these mysterious years, and many people have their favorite version of the story.” (Shakespeare's "Lost Years") One theory is that William had poached on Sir Thomas Lucy’s land and to avoid punishment he fled. Another theory is that he was simply working as a schoolmaster. Being catholic was treason in Elizabethan England, so secret Catholics would hire other Catholics to teach their children.
