In 1803, Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory from Napoleon for $15 million dollars (or 80 million francs). In 1819, with little choice the Spanish signed the Adams-Onís Treaty and ceded Florida to the United States. While pushing back the Indians the U.S. gained a significant amount of territory. In 1824, Mexico offered cheap land to any American willing to move to Texas and in 6 years American residents outnumbered Mexican residents by more than double, but in 1830 barred any further American immigration. In 1845, years after Texas gained its independence it officially became a state. Just like in Texas the Mexican Government invited Americans to come and live there and soon the Americans outnumbered the Mexicans. Oregon territory was shared between the British and the Americans, due a treaty in 1818, but by the mid-1840s American settlers in the territory urged the government to gain control of the region. At the time of the treaty the United States and the British had established little in the Oregon territory, but in 1820-30s American interest grew exponentially. In 1846, American President Polk suggested that the American-Canadian border be at the 49th parallel, but when that didn’t work he tried to assert America’s claim to all of the Oregon Territory and make the border at the fifty-four forty parallel.
