John Smiths vision of living in harmony and peace in the new colony soon became uncertain. He knew he had to find other means of supporting his people. Soon people started to become sick and some had died due to starvation and other illnesses. John became concerned and worried that the new colony would not be able to provide the resources for life, and he soon realized they needed to seek resources in other colonies. John knew what he had to do and cared about his people, therefore I find him to be a caring individual and not the monster some have made him out to be. Perhaps, some of the detail he wrote did not describe every detail of the hard times they suffered because that would admit to failure. He did not want to admit any failure in his writings. Most people like to write of all the good things they have done in their life versus the bad. When I die I want people to remember me for the good things I’ve done and I think John Smith did the same. So, I do believe some of his writing may be of propaganda. With Johns good character me made the decision to take some of the treasures he found and sailed to other colonies to trade treasures for food. His colony needed food or they would not survive and prosper. While sailing the waters he wrote of his journey. Historians argue that his explanations of areas and the whereabouts of Indian settlements were not accurate. Readers of his books might say he was not as heroic as he made himself out to be. What one person may classify as heroic, another person may not feel the same way. I think it is heroic that he was able to gain the trust of so many people to leave their colony, and to start a new life in an unfamiliar land far away. John believed that the reason they fed him well was because they wanted to eat him once he got fat. Maybe that statement is true in the eyes of John at the time of his writings, but once he gained their trust he may have thought otherwise. People usually like to write in a journal when they are in despair and their thoughts may not be clear or uncertain. This can cause people to write a propaganda that later they did not
