Was Gerald Responsible For Eva's Death?

Improved Essays
Many people would argue that Gerald wasn’t really responsible for Eva’s death. He gave her attention, helped her financially and took her from the streets and sheltered her. From the start, Gerald felt guilty as soon as he heard the name “Daisy Renton”, Eva’s second identity. “Alright, I knew her. Let’s leave it at that”. Priestly uses this dialogue to show the audience that Gerald is ashamed of his secret relationship with Eva. “Let’s leave it at that” implies that Gerald does not want anybody to know about his relationship. Gerald’s actions did have a significant impact on Eva, as she could’ve thought that a prince had come to rescue her. To Eva, Gerald was her knight in shining armour. Although to Gerald, Eva was a mistress who can be discarded

Moving on to the character of Inspector Goole, I can finally evaluate that Priestley used him as his mouthpiece right from the beginning since he is the only impartial persona that attempts to persuade each character to accept and share their guilt for their role in Eva Smith’s suicide. He appears to be very purposeful throughout the play and he actually makes numerous statements on the issue of responsibility and social equality by stating that “we don’t live alone”. These teachings are supposed to have an impact on both the character and the audience eventually making them consider their own actions and their acceptance or refusal of embracing social responsibility. However, this quote particularly aims to threaten the contemporary audience…

Selfish Love “…just tell him the truth – that you never loved him – and it’s all wiped out forever.” This was a quote from Jay Gatsby pleading Daisy Buchanan to declare that she never loved her husband, Tom Buchanan. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it’s very debatable who the most self-centered character of the story was. It could be Tom, who just used Daisy has a safety net for when his side relationships failed, or it could be Gatsby who wanted Daisy all to himself despite what it would do to her family. In the end, the presence of love creates a selfish person and although all the characters mentioned have been struck by love, Daisy Buchanan has portrayed the most self-centered acts.…

Lying, this word might mean different things to different people; however, one thing that everybody can agree on is that there is nobody that has never told a lie. People lie naturally, whether it be to get out of embarrassing situations, please a friend, or even write a fiction book, which in itself is simply a collection of lies written by a somewhat creative person. Fitzgerald which depicts the world of the wealthy as a world full of illusions and deceits, display several types of lies, ranging from a benign white lie, to a full-fledged deceitful, harmful lie. Although Edna did love her children, she was not as motherly as society would like her to be. Unlike other children, if one of Edna’s children were to hurt himself while playing, he wouldn’t “rush crying to his mother’s arms for comfort” (18); instead, he would “pick himself up, wipe the water out of his eyes and the sand out of his mouth, and go on playing” (18). When her husband insisted that Raoul had a fever, she argued that he didn’t, and then didn’t immediately get out of bed to…
