“Two days after the Civil War ended, Lincoln gave a speech outside the White House detailing his plans for peace and abolition of slavery,” (Caffrey, Assassination of Lincoln). In America, at the time, slavery was extremely controversial. The South was very for it, while the North opposed it. After the North won the war that concerned slavery, the South was furious. Lincoln was disliked by many for his decisions. Especially, when the Emancipation Proclamation was passed, which abolished slavery. If there had not been a plot, it could have been explained a random, troubled, drunk man who happened to have a gun. Even this, is far off from what occurred that night in April. Along with Booth, “there were others who, if not complicit in the plan, were certainly aware,” according to Bogar and Richardson (28-29). Twelve people ended up being put on trial. They had an original plan as well. Booth was supposed to kidnap Lincoln. Then, the president would be held hostage until the Union released their captured Confederate soldiers. This fact explains how these people needed Lincoln to get what they wanted. In the end, the attackers still did not get what they wanted even though they went as far as they thought they needed to
