Was Abigail Williams To Blame For The Crucible

Decent Essays
Based on my knowledge of the witchcraft trials through the play The Crucible By Arthur Miller, I believe that Abigail Williams was mostly to blame for what happened in Salem, Massachusetts. Abigail caused many problems in the town of Salem that did not need to happen. The first problem that arises because of Abigail was her affair with John Proctor. The affair itself ended up causing even more problems. John was afraid that if he continued seeing Abigail, the people of Salem would find out and it would ruin his good name.

In “The Crucible” (1952) the author, Arthur Miller, makes it appear as though Abigail Williams, one of the accused, is guilty for starting the Salem Witch trials which started in 1692 and ended around 1693 the witch trials took a total of 20 lives with 19 being hung the other one was pressed to death. If somebody had the option to avoid all punishment without any consequence they would most likely do so. So if anyone were in Abigail’s position being accused of witchcraft and being threatened to be beaten or hung, would they confess to avoid punishment or keep their silence and suffer? Would they take the blame and live to see another day or would they hold their tongue and perish? If anyone in their right mind said they would confess they wouldn’t…

In The Crucible it was Abigail Williams’s flaws – Dishonesty, Jealousy, and Lust – that led her to be most responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. Abigail’s dishonesty by saying that she could see spirits of accused witches, jealousy towards Elizabeth because of her love of John Proctor, and her lust of John Proctor caused her to be the most responsible for the events that occurred. Her affair with John Proctor made her want to go through all sorts of crazy things just so she could be with him when he really didn’t even want her like she wanted…

Foremost, Rebecca was a woman of utmost prestige in following God’s path. Through the restless evil in people’s heart, a town blinded by the devil created a suitable environment for my wife to be hanged. Although Rebecca was accused by Goody Putnam, Abigail William’s selfish and mindless actions released the devil’s curtain onto the stage of Salem. With jealously and hate in her heart, Abigail created a setting to impose her motivation as well as allowing others to do the same. Based on my evaluation, Abigail Williams must be convicted guilty for lying under the oath of court, manipulation of the people's’ hearts, and the eventual killing of twenty innocent people in Salem.…

Salem in the late 1600s was tortured by witch hunts, with neighbors turning on each other to save themselves from death. Ruled by a theocracy, the Salem community was thoroughly examined to see who was a witch, with reasons ranging from reading a book to murmuring under their breath to not attending church. Nobody was safe, and with everyone lying to protect themselves, the court took drastic measures and sentenced people to hang. John Proctor and Abigail Williams are most directly to blame for the deaths in Salem because John was lacking in faith, Abigail was seeking revenge, and they both kept secrets and lied to protect their name, which led them to be untrustworthy. John Proctor, a farmer and loving father of three sons, was not as faithful as a man was supposed to be during this time in Salem.…

One of the reasons why Abigail is most to blame for the witch trials is because how often Abigail makes false accusations throughout the play. Firstly, Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft right in the beginning when she told the girls that “Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam‘s dead sisters” (Act 1 Scene I). Abigail knew she would be in trouble if anyone found out what the girls were doing in the forest when the townsmen suggested to call Hale, so Abigail automatically…
