Have you found that life can be a struggle? Mine rarely drifts along with the perfection of my dreams or to the sweet songs we hear on the radio. The struggle is deeper than we normally think. The usual view of our struggle has been that we are fighting against flesh and blood, against other people. But the Apostle Paul says the battle is not against flesh and blood; it is much deeper than that. This fight is between the Kingdom of God and Satan and people are the combat zone. The battle is obvious in the wars, insurgencies, and crimes that fill the newspapers we read but is also seen in the stresses and fears of all the people, in family fights and the struggling church, in the troubles and mental disorders that afflict humanity today.
The human race is in tumultuous times under satanic control, which the Apostle Paul calls, the rulers of the darkness of this world (6:12 KJV)—a very significant phrase. We see in the Bible from beginning to end that all humans without Christ, without exclusion of any, no matter how crafty or accomplished or cultured they may be, are helpless victims in satanic control. Through Christ, freedom is attained. Through the amazing mystery of the cross and the resurrection, Jesus has broken the power and bondage of Satan over human lives. All who accept and admit this are set free to live in complete freedom and liberty as the children of God.
We are set free to participate in the fight, to be overcomers in our own lives, and to become the conduits by which others are set free. How can we do this? The Apostle Paul's answer is this: Put on the full armor of God. Read Eph. 6:10-18. God provided for us to win this battle. This is the true freedom we must find.
