could understand the real struggles people were facing at this time. The book was very easy to
finish because I really wanted to know what would happen next. It grabbed my attention so I
would want to keep reading, and I was disappointed when I finished it.
The very first time that I read about the terrible situations that Melba went through was
when I was hooked on the book. From the very beginning I could see that this was a book that
was going to take me to another time and make me feel like I was there.

Things like getting spit on, slapped, punched, kicked and more brutal things
would happen on a daily basis for Melba, and no would attempt to do anything to help her. She
was on her own, having to protect herself. For a little while she had a sliver of protection
named Danny but he got taken from her like everything else in her life when she started going
to Central High School. There was so much hatred and tension in this book, it was very obvious
to tell that the white students truly did hate the black kids. This book helped me see that times
really have changed for the good. People are treated equally now, there is no segregating now
and that is good. It is crazy to think that if the brave kids like Melba and the other eight
students would have given up and not finished the school year because of the awful things that
were being done to them, life today may be different.
After reading this book I can clearly see that America was not always as good as we
thought. People at the time of segregation could not see that a person was a person no matter
what they looked like or what their skin color was. They would not take the time to get to know
them to see that they were normal humans just like them. Sadly, children had to get
