Link
Character Type: Round
Link is a character in the book Warriors Don’t Cry. He only was introduced at the end of the book, but we can see the amount of layers in him already. In Chapter 15, on pg. 177, Melba thinks about how, “Each time I passed Link in the hallway, he winked at me. It was the one kind gesture in a morning filled with hellish activity. In the days that followed, every time I saw Link, he acknowledged me in some way.” This quote shows how outgoing Link was to secretly talk to Melba, or even secretly wink at her. This could have affected his social life, because he was friends with Andy, someone who was extremely vicious towards Melba, and whose death threats were really serious. Being kind to Melba could also affect his

Even though he lives with a very racist family, Link has a different perspective on black people because of his close relationship with Nana Healey. Nana Healey was Link’s old babysitter and was African American. Link loved her and resented the treatment she received from his parents. Because he knows that Nana Healey was a good and loving person, he could imagine that other African American people, like Melba, might be good and loving as well. In Chapter 16 on pg. 184 Link expresses through the telephone that, “If I hadn’t convinced those guys to leave, they were gonna get you. And if you don’t believe I’m on your side, here’s proof listen up.” This quote really shows how Link tries hard to make all kind and loving people get the life that they deserve. We can see that Link is being kind and compassionate to Melba, but he is doing secretly, which won’t make him an outsider. From Melba’s perspective, it was probably harder to trust him because he still called her rude names and was on Andy’s side when he was attacking her. Another quote to show what Link’s main goal was is, “I’m tired of worrying about you. What will you do when I’m gone?” Link said in a secret location with Melba Chapter 18 on pg. 216. This shows that Link truly cares about Melba and how she will go to Central without him telling her what to do. From this we can see he is being very kind and compassionate, clandestinely. Overall, Link’s main goal was to be a kind and compassionate person to everybody without becoming an

Elizabeth Price Foley, an American legal theorist once wisely stated, “The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” This quote intelligently states with hidden meaning that two people do not have to think exactly the same way, or live near each other to remain friends. In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the many different friendships that develop also reflect the meanings behind this quote. The characters in the book do not always agree with each other, yet they keep open minds about ideas differing from their own and consequently grow much because of these relationships. The necessity of friendship throughout life can be seen in the interactions between the characters Reuven, Danny, and Rev Malters.…
