Wilson uses Gabriel to establish the fact that family members can be codependent, and support each other even when hurting. Troy reminds Rose that due to Gabe's injury from the past, Troy was able to buy the house with money Gabe takes in from the government by saying, “That’s the only way I got a roof over my head...because of that metal plate”(15). In the quotation, Troy says that he was only able to get a roof over his head, due to his brothers injury, this is one of the most influential lines in the play because it shows the dependence between the Maxon Brothers. The author shows sadness in Troys voice in script by implementing a pause to show that Troy is sad but grateful. By showing how Gabriel inadvertently supports his family, Wilson reveals how family support made the whole family better off.…

Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. Although the older child is typically the conformist and the younger child is the rebel, the McCandless family is a little different because both children are the rebels. Krakauer says, “Also like Chris, she clashed fiercely with Walt and Billie as an adolescent… [but] Carine made peace with her parents shortly after Chris disappeared” (129).…
