Warpaint Synthesis

Decent Essays
Warpaint is an indie rock band consisting of only women member. Heads Up is their third LP and all three have been released through rough trade. Over their first two LPs Warpaint made ethereal dream pop music in the same vain as Beach House or the Cocteau Twins. Heads Up marks a departure from this sound towards more electronic and indie pop sound. While some of this new album can be generic; most of it is surprisingly enjoyable. Overall, this new sound works well for Warpaint since they had always sounded like a cheap rip-off of Beach House. Many songs on this album have a pulsating beat that makes you nod your head or tap your toe. The best track on this album, “The Stall,” starts with a great drum beat that continues throughout the song

When Patrick Loggins’ Time Wharp project released the smartly and jazzily constructed “Cole Dub” earlier this year, I had to sit back and notice. “Cole Dub”, like much of Time Wharp’s eponymous debut, toes the line between nightclub and morning commute music - you can hear the conflict in the thumping nocturnal beat mixed with that oily hi hat (which also helps to explain the choice in cover art). “Cole Dub” and the rest of Time Wharp is a very, very nice debut LP from a producer who could - and should - be getting some more recognition soon. The whole album is worth a listen, but “Cole Dub” is the undisputed standout here - there’s even a three-minute track, “Median”, there to provide a buildup for it.…

The second part I would sample is from 5:40 to 5:53. I would sample this part because of the drum break. This part has James Brown's voice on it. It starts with James saying ha-ha then James saying "Ain't It Funky" 4xs. That part could fix in any of todays Hip Hop with no problem.…

Besides of Charles Mingus, the artists are including Booker Ervin, Horace Parlan, John Handy, and Dannie Richmond. In my opinion, the tempo of “Boogie Stop Shuffle” is fast, and when I’m listening to this song, I could also easily find that the meter is triple. I’m not sure about the feel of this music, but after listening for a couple of…

When thinking of hip-hip, one may not expect to see a Mexican woman, from Australia, having a part in its influence in Los Angeles. In fact, hip-hop being a genre of music that is highly dominated by men, makes it a rare sight for when women do share a role in its musical impact, especially a Mexican one at that. Nonetheless, Maya Jupitar is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the generalized definition of what modern hip-hop has become. She has flipped the script on hip-hop music and instead has put her own unique twist in her artistry as a rapper. Maya Jupiter is the epitome of what it means to not only define music in a new and invigorating way, but also to produce musical hybridity that offers innovation to a specific genre.…

Their song “Rock Box” provides an example of hardcore rap that was able to crossover to mainstream audience which was one their main reasons for success. Part of their appeal and success was their mixture of rock guitar and hip hop beats, which was seen as adversaries at times. It’s the African-based cultural forms and philosophical approach existing in the African Diaspora that continue to reflect similar musical, dance, and oral practices as those in Africa; though not African, enough resemblances in the performer's’ attitude and relationship to audience exist that cultural connections to African cultural practices are apparent. How does African culture continue to show in Hip-hop over time? Hip-Hop culture, since around the 1950s, has shown the world different aspects of the Africanist Aesthetic within its culture.
