Warm Nights Project Analysis

When I participated in the Big Idea Project with my team, we created the Warm Nights Project. It was amazing to see the impact we could make with something that started out on a piece of paper. The main goal was to collect clothes and sleeping bags for the homeless population in Denver. From this experience, I learned what it sincerely means to be a generous leader. By being a generous leader, I set aside my own needs to take the initiative and make a positive change in the community. A lot of time and effort was put in to achieve the desired results. Since I was in charge of the public relations, I helped with getting the word out about the drive to other students. I made announcements in my classes and expanded the drive over to several

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

My goal was to raise $5,000, but I only raised $3,000. However, the real objective was being able to intrigue people on an issue that does not get much recognition. The best moment of my project was the feeling of joy, relief, and love when all the participants sat around and listened to my speech about my purpose of the walk. Oddly enough, I struggle with speaking out to a large crowd, but individuals who signed up decided to share their stories too. Their stories made me feel more connected to the them, not as anxious to speak, and charitable.…

A leadership experience that had a positive influence in other students lives and my life was having the opportunity to be chosen as a link crew leader. As a link crew leader I participated in organizing the freshman orientation, getting assigned a group of freshman to do activities with, and throughout the year visit a freshman classroom and do activities with them. Those activities varied, disguised as exciting games, they were actually great metaphors for skills that they could apply to high school and through life. I wanted to make this the best orientation ever for them and I wanted to make them feel comfortable because I knew what it was like to be in their positions, I was just as anxious and out of place as they were.…

Often times when we hear the word ‘service’ we think of doing something for someone other than yourself. In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

I worked in a group with four other people, not only did this experience help me understand, as most group work does, how to work with diverse individuals and ideas but also how topics such as the one we chose, gender identity in public schools, have developed over time. This project highlighted for me how issues today have been impacted by historical beliefs, ideologies and experienced their own ecological system of development. Gender identity was initially seen as an illness to be cured and hidden, then slowly the ideas shifted to be included in the DSM as a diagnosis and I feel now slowly shifting away from the concept of having to conceptualize gender identity and towards the acceptance of diversity. The project was a great way to see…
