The Renaissance era lasted from the early 1300s to the mid-1600s and was coined the period of rebirth or classical revival of the classical past. During this time, God became less of the focal point and humanism (man was at the measure of all things) took root. Italy was perhaps one of the most important regions of the time due to its beauty and grandeur. The top city-states during the Renaissance included Florence, Milan, and Venice. In an effort to understand how the Renaissance period impacted both artworks and artists of Venice, it is important to review how some of the most prestigious artists of Venice incorporated the Renaissance characteristics in their work.

Naturalism was depicted as nature as the focus or background of the art work Artists also utilized classicism to replicate the style of Greeks and Romans techniques through symmetry and balance in their work. Giorgione, Bellini’s student, began to set the stage for one of the greatest Venetian artist in Venetian history, Titian. Giorgione’s style like Bellini, Basaiti, and Congeliano, incorporated the use of chiaroscuro, landscapes, naturalism, and perspective; but held an element of mystery. Giorgione’s work moved beyond his predecessors as the iconic symbolism was not present and it is a bit harder to determine the meaning behind his works. For instance, in the painting The Tempest, the woman is shown in picture is breast feeding an infant in the nude on the grass and a gentleman is standing on the other side of the picture in a pose. Some historians have believed that the man was a solider and others have said he was man that represents the elite aristocracy of the time. However, in-depth study of the painting has caused historians to discuss the use of allegory in the work. Some believe that the female represents charity. Further investigation of the painting includes the entire scene. In the background the landscape is full of atmosphere. There is an obvious storm brewing as witnessed by the lightening in the sky and breeze in the trees.
