Many people wonder why the world is the way it is. Maybe it’s because we don’t know how to cooperate, or maybe it’s because we’re scared. People sometimes give their opinions whether it’s hurtful or not, and sometimes we fail to remind ourselves that no matter what anyone says, no matter how much they try to hurt you, you know what you are and you know what is true.…

My eyes had opened and I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God, without man” (68). Why do people try to let others down using the saying “im better than you” when they're clearly not? All people are placed at the same value either there white, black, hispanic or arabian there all the same which means we should all be treated equal. If this world did not place people with the same value or acted like certain races were meant to be killers or child abusers then there would be more racism than there already is in this world and racism is already bad enough as it is. “Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.” ~Unknown.…

Affirmative Discrimination In a time when skin color, brain size, and theories such as social Darwinism are no longer factors used to determine social status, it seems that, on the surface, the world should be finally extinct of the conflict among races. Scientifically, no race is the “ultimate” one, because at the end of the day, humans are all just humans—right? Contrary to the popular belief that “All men (people) are created equal,” however, this is indeed not the case (“The Declaration of Independence” 1). In fact, there is a contention that runs far deeper than the mere struggles among races.…

“It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences,” said Audre Lorde, a Caribbean-American writer, and civil rights activist. In this quote she is saying that if we just agreed that we are different, and we won’t alway get along, then the world would be a more peaceful place. Even in today’s society people are pulled apart from others because of their differences. Even so the society today is better than it was during times like America in the 1930’s, on the Indian reservations, and in Europe between Jews and Christians.…

Contrary to the common belief towards war at the time, Gandhi once commented, “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent.” Gandhi alludes that violence is not the answer to conflicts. Though war may seem to be for a just cause in the short term, it only encourages violence in the future and eventually leads to permanent negative consequences. From 1914 to 1918, World War I demonstrated the unfortunate repercussions of warfare that began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This seemingly insignificant conflict soon spread rapidly and eventually Russia, France, Great Britain, and Germany were all drawn into the war, predominantly because of their involvement…

The sentencing system in the US and the influences upon prison inmates is an increasing issue. The way people are raised and the environment people grow up in really affect them. The effect that inmates’ backgrounds have on prison sentencing is anything but just due to things such as social status, race, and the lack of resources, environmental factors, and financial income. This causes even the most dangerous criminals to receive short or reduced sentences, and puts people that make our world unsafe right back into a world of freedom.…

Pity, no longer bad Imagine a world in which every person is a selfish being that only keeps their own interests in mind and where they have no social responsibility to help a person in need, be it a friend or family member. There are many in modern-day society that face persecution due to their race or gender. Those who support their ideology are the same people who fight for social justice. On the other hand are people who do nothing or support the maltreatment to benefit themselves and those around them. One such person who fought for equality was Hellen Keller whom was blind and deaf, but still received a bachelor or arts degree;fighting for the underprivileged.…

Have you ever been made to feel less than because of your skin color, sex, sexual orientation, or even your religion? This is a question that could be asked of anyone. I think that is what Patricia Hill-Collins meant by “The Matrix of Domination.” If you take a good hard look at the world around us, people seem eager to dislike everyone for one reason or another and they have a myriad of reasons to do so. What is interesting is the reasons often coincide with the hatred, and it still doesn’t make sense when one thinks about it.…
