The novel The War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells, tells the story of an invasion of Earth by Martians. These superior beings are ruthless and destroy everything in their path. They are envious of Earth for its abundance of resources and came here to do one thing, and that is to take over. On the surface, it may look like an imaginary tale of science fiction and storytelling, but there is a deeper meaning to all of this that the author was trying to portray. H. G. Wells wrote this book in 1897 and it was one of the first books that had conflict between humans and an alien attack. It shows how people come together and try to do things with each other's help. Even in situations where you may never have talked to someone before, in the face of such danger, people band together to fight the common enemy. Social barriers or distinctions fade away and people from all different lives stick together. It is a beautiful thing when you think about the advancement of our species, and how instinctively we will band together to become stronger. It shows the strength that is found in unity and suggests that a communal effort is essential to overcoming challenges. Additionally, Wells does a great job of exploring the theme of a refusal to become discouraged. The narrator witnesses some of the greatest cities fall to the Martians, but he does not give in to the despair and keeps moving forward. He wants to keep pushing to find his wife. Wells shows that even in the darkest times, hope can still keep you alive. Even when everything looks to be over, and it seems as if nothing is left, the one thing that can keep you going is hope.
