War of the Operating Systems: iOS versus Android To understand why Apple and Google are in a power struggle to gain consumer attention, it is important to find out what exactly these operating systems are. By definition, “iOS is Apple’s proprietary mobile operating system (OS) for its handheld devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The operating system is based on the Macintosh OS X.” (Rouse, “iOS”). On the other end of the spectrum, “Android OS is a Linux-based platform for mobile phones. Android was released under the Apache v2 open source license.” (Rouse, “Android OS”). It is clear to see that these two operating systems have their similarities, yet they could not be further distinct from one another. In an everlasting rivalry where one company borrows features to get ahead of the other, iOS and Android are major competitors heading toward a singularity and Android will be the one to come out on top.
