Winston realized that the Party has planned to minimize the memory of the people. The Party does this so the people cannot try to revolt against them.

If I were Winston it would aggravate me that the Party tried to control people so much and there was no freedom. Winston becomes very frustrated when he doesn't understand why the Party is gradually taken peoples memory. It would be hard for me to live in a controlled society because I am a very independent person.
