The story takes place May–June 1944 in Spain , 5 years after the Spanish civil war during the fascist period under Franco. The film does not portray a negative perception but it enhances the actual events that took place in this time. For example it takes the harsh realities of the fascist era and enlightens them with the story of Ofelia , the fantasy brings a softer appeal to the film. Some of the many real devastating events of war that re-lived within the fantasy acts is the battle of the main character Ofelia and the Faun. Not only having to fight for what she believes but having to fight against herself, like Vidal fighting himself in trying to keep himself as powerful as possible like Franco was perceived to be. The facts of war not only depict the violence but the abuse , the manipulative tendencies and constant desire of reaching what seemed to be a winning of battle for vidal and a lost for Ofelia. According to the novel, “Fighting For Franco: International Volunteers in Nationalist Spain during the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39” (Page 240 ) “ Cultural difference and the negligible military contribution of the volunteer, also the limited views held by so many, notably the women supporters (‘pitifully shallow’ says Keene). We may recognise also a particular mindset in the stress on action and the cult of death, the abusive rhetoric (‘Reds’, ‘human scum’), and the endless reliteration of atrocity stories, mostly from a religious and people who had never been to Spain. The resultant worldview is not a pretty one. The second thing we should congratulate Judith Keene on is that she never loses her professional nerve in the portrayal.
