According to our lecture notes, “Through dance, people of different races, ethnicities and even nationalities can come together to overcome their differences and at the same time achieve their dreams of fame and, perhaps, fortune” (Lecture, Second Wave Dance Films). This is a significantly important theme throughout this documentary, and leads me to my first point about the film, the theme of expression of emotion and…
Even though the African nation experiences no resounding victory, the novel still draws to a close with an optimistic outlook as Leah reflects on her future in the Congo. “It’s taken ten years and seems like a miracle, but the Americans are losing in Angola. Their land mines are still all over the country…but in my dreams I still have hope” (Kingsolver 607). Leah is emphasizing that Angola may be war-torn still, but it is making progress towards freedom. During years of oppression under Belgian rule, the Congolese proletariat were kept subservient and uneducated, and though citizens were growing tired of this way of life, nothing improved until one individual or a group of like individuals made the executive decision to revolt.…

Appalling acts of violence continue to be the key method for military leaders to gain prominence in society. This is especially effective against those with malleable minds, more specifically children. Specifically, in A Long Way Gone , author Ishmael Beah ’s…
After the Holocaust, the world had promised that they would “never again let anything like this happen.” In the spring of 1994, all hell broke loose as one million people died in the Rwandan Genocide. What happened to the promise to never let another genocide occur again Racism, competition of land between Hutu and Tutsi, and denying the situation in Rwanda as genocide, the killings occurred and continued for 100 long days. However, that all happened because of European colonization in Africa. Doc 1, by Gerard Prunier, states how the Belgians divided Rwanda people based on physical features.…
A Long Way Gone (Memoirs of a Boy Soldier) by Ishmael Beah was not very appealing at first, but I eventually fell for it. I thought of choosing King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochschild but I thought my fiction book was somewhat similar to it, thus, I wanted to opt for something different. When I first read the summary of A Long Way Gone, I was truly not quite interested, however, once I read the reviews, I began to change my mind. Its critics seemed astonished and devastated at the same time because the book delivered such a horrendous, but definitely a very true reality that we are not very aware of.…
A Long Way Gone (2007) is a true story of Ishmael Beah, who unwillingly is forced to become a child soldier when a civil war breaks out in Sierra Leone. The story starts with Beah only 12 years old, who is away to perform along with his brother and friends when rebels attack his village. During all this chaos, confusion and ambiguity of war, all of them are left to wander from village to village in search of food and shelter and along the way commit to acts they had never thought of doing so otherwise. The book explores around a lot of different themes throughout the reading and for this paper I will talk about the methods of child recruitment, the role as child soldiers and lastly the rehabilitation provided to these child soldiers.…
Gender effect in the Sierra Leone War Through Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara’s autobiographies, the world learned about the devastating war in Sierra Leone through the eyes of a boy and a girl. The civil war stripped children from their families and killed many innocent civilians. In A Long Way Gone by Beah Beah he says, “One of the main aims of the rebels was to force the civilians to stay with them, especially women and children” (Beah 37). The rebels used the civilians as either bait for the army or as servants. They took girls to cook or exploit and recruited boys as soldiers.…
Many Underdeveloped countries in Africa face many struggles since eradicating European imperialism from their countries. Sierra Leone a country of despair, that had gone down in hill in many ways after becoming a country. Sadly, Sierra Leone has faced economic, social, and political influences that have negatively impact the country in many ways. Such ways that have destroyed the country is a civil war, dividing the country with two different group of people who are out to kill. Many people have been affected, even children who were used as child soldiers.…
For a great deal of foreign and civil and economic disputes, there are a great number of Americans who believe that we should keep to our own business. However, what happens when the dirty dealings and disparagement of other countries becomes an increasingly taxing problem for the United States? At what point should we really commit to intervening and solving these conflicts which spill over into the rest of the civilized world? Most importantly, what is the most effective and economically sound tactic for resolution at our disposal?…

Joseph Kalema laid down alone for many nights on the streets of Uganda, hungry, alone, unloved, but with a dream for a better life. He was one of the lucky few who were picked up off the side of the street by a pastor and taken to an orphanage. Far too many children face even worse fates than Joseph. Many children live their entire childhood wondering if they will ever have a place to sleep or someone who will love them.…
There were many civil wars that have taken place on the African continent for decades. Many unstable countries are at the advantage of having assistance from the somewhat more stable neighbors. The likelihood of a country to be in civil war is high if it takes place in a neighboring country. The genocide in Rwanda had not only spread the murderous act across the country but also with its neighboring countries. Today, children who have been denied education and are trained to fight in wars are manipulated by local political leaders.…
