I read War Comes to Willy Freeman By: James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. The main character is an African American girl who starts off at the age of thirteen. Her name is Wilhelmina but everyone calls her Willy.
Starting off Willy Freeman says her most vivid memories of the day war came to her town. She remembers the flashing off the metal of the bayonets carried by the British soldiers. Her parents are Jordan and Lucy Freeman. They are blacks but are free because her father, Jordan has agreed to fight with the Americans against the British in the American Revolution. The former owner, Colonel Ledyard, had freed Jordan as well as Lucy and Willy. On that same day Willy says that she wishes her father was home but her mother Lucy tells her that Jordan is safer out on the bay fishing than fighting with the Americans. Willy continues to search for her mother, she looks were the British are holding American prisoners, such as churches and sugar houses. Willy and horace have been sharing a loft since Willy’s arrival at the tavern, and Horace finds out she is a girl. After finding out Willy is a girl Horace insist that she sleeps somewhere else.
