Many Americans saw the war brides as refugees, but many of the war brides were coming to America because they made a commitment to someone they loved and they were following through with it. War brides sacrificed more than anyone could ever imagine. These women left behind the only lives they’ve ever known and their families. Often times, the war brides would arrive in America only to find out their “husbands” had moved on without them, and were waiting to greet their wives with the women they met or were already married to when they arrived in America. Many soldiers greeted their wives with flowers and gifts, but some greeted them with the announcement of divorce. Some soldiers didn’t even show up to greet the women they married. War brides had no idea what their husbands were actually like since they hadn’t known them very long before getting married. When some women arrived from their journey, they were welcomed with gifts, hugs, and kisses from their husbands, only to find out later that behind closed doors they were dealing with a monster. War brides dealt with emotional abusers, physical abusers, alcoholics and cheaters. The brides had no idea their “wonderful” husbands could ever turn out to be this way, but the minute they found out they regretted making the decision to voyage to America. The bride that journeyed clear to America just to be abandoned by the one she thought she loved. The millions of war brides that came to America have not only helped shape our country but have helped us with diversity. Ranging from several nationalities these women brought to America they have broadened our views on different nationalities and beliefs. The brave women who made the biggest sacrifices of their lives will always be remembered for their courage and their beautiful yet tragic love
