Wanting Mor Sparknotes

Wanting Mor is a novel about a young girl, living in Afghanistan after the war. One of the main plot points of the book is the death of her mother (Mor is the Pushto word for mother). This takes place at the start of the novel as the story focuses on how Jameela, the main character, and her father live without her. Jameela is established as a calm, caring individual even in terrible events. She can be judgemental, especially towards women’s clothing and religion. Her thoughts are not spoken however, so they have no impact. Jameela is friendly and has good intentions. Overall her actions seem logical and kind.

In the first chapter, Jameela takes care of her sick mother. These actions do not help as Mor is discovered to be dead. Such care of

Jameela is interested in the lesson even though it is not for her. Later, the owning family holds a party and invites Baba. Soon the gathering grows into a disastrous mess, with food in the carpets and drunk men. Because of his behavior, the owners tell Baba to leave. The main character grabs her porani (a loose type of head covering) given to her by Mor. This shows she holds on deeply to the memory of her mother. Her father walks out with a determined look.

He then introduces Jameela to a woman. Baba says that she will be her new stepmother. This woman has a son named Masood who Jameela talks to. He originally seems insulting to Jameela; however, he turns out to be nice. The two adolescents talk about their families. Unintentionally saddening him, Jameela asks about Masood’s father. It is revealed that he was killed by Americans in a prison.

After being asked about her family, Jameela mentions that her uncle was blown up. Masood then implies that she is strong by saying, “‘That was a very big test. The stronger you are, the harder Allah will test you.’’ (Khan, Rukhsana. Wanting Mor. Page 59.) He appears to be a thoughtful character by his actions during the conversation. Jameela’s stepmother then tells her to start working. She has appeared hard to impress and seems

She does not speak her thoughts much and is often disrespected. Information is given to her abruptly and her ideas are not respected. Masood appears respectful and seems friendly towards Jameela. He is not extraordinary but his small amount of power can go a long way. Baba and Jameela’s stepmother imply disrespect towards their children. They, especially the stepmother, seems somewhat manipulative. A good example is erasing the letters of Jameela’s name. It was clear that the writing mattered to our main character, yet the stepmother removed them. Baba did not directly contribute to that action, but he could have stopped it. They also stopping praying as frequently. This shows their true

Amir feels as though, “ Baba hates [him] a little” because he hadn 't, “ turned out a little more like him” and even though Amir tries very hard to find common interest, for example, trying to play soccer, the similarities are not there (Hosseini 19). The lack of a common interest is one reason Amir and his father never bonded emotionally. Amir has also faced life long guilt after his mother dies while giving birth to him. This tragedy is haunting to Amir and causes him to believe that Baba resents him for the death of, “ his [father’s] beloved wife, his beautiful princess,” which makes Amir feel even more detached from his father Baba (Hosseini 19). Amir’s feelings of alienation are amplified because of Baba’s close relationship with Hassan.…

Mariam and Laila are “poles apart in their disposition and conduct” (Akhtar, Rauf, Ikram, Raees). If the novel had been set in Afghanistan in peace, it would have been a “ story of contrasts,” a life of “stark deprivation” for Mariam and a privileged, professional career for Laila ((Akhtar, Rauf, Ikram, Raees). But war drags the two women to the same level, destroying both their families. While Mariam remains passive, Laila refuses to back down, punching Rasheed after he tries to hurt her and ignoring his rules. By contrast, Mariam seems even more submissive until the novel’s climax, when Mariam chooses to kill Rasheed to save Laila’s life.…
