A family in China experiences all the emotions on the spectrum. In Pearl S. Buck’s novel, The Good Earth, Wang Lung and his family go through series of events that represent happiness and hardships. Wang Lung symbolizes the common person in ways that may not be clear at first. No matter where you are or who you are, it is by the law of nature that you are bound to acknowledge the means of life. An obvious emotion that everyone is bound to experience is the feeling of being overwhelmingly full of joy. This emotion could be experienced in many different ways around the world such as getting accepted to a dream college or getting your driver’s license, or in Wang Lung’s case, having a son as his first born. In present day, in most parts of the world, having any gender child for the first time is an overwhelmingly and exciting experience. Desperation can lead to people doing things out of character. This is represented when Wang Lung’s young son steals meat when the family is starving in the South. The young boy meant well but ended up doing actions that weren’t acceptable. Some people break the law or break the rules because it is their only option. This example really supports the idea that The Good Earth relates to all people around the world because the topic of being poor or experiencing desperation isn’t one that is widely talked about.
