Wang Lung and his family go on a journey through satisfying times and awful times. The novel The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is an excellent example of how life is full of surprises. In people’s life, they go through many obstacles to achieve where they want to go. Wang Lund, the main character that has to survive in the world as an underprivileged farmer in China who rises to become a wealthy landowner. In the novel Wang Lung is married to O-Lan a kitchen slave of the House of Hwang. O-Lan helps Wang Lung throughout his journey to the end of her life. Later in the novel Wang Lung and his family run into an obstacle in the road. A famine sweeps through the majority of northern China because of the shortage of water. Wang Lung and his family try to endure the hardships of the famine, but are forced to travel south to survive. In the south Wang Lung tries to survive with the many challenges that are in the south. Some of the challenges that Wang Lung faces are finding food, trying to work, and providing for his family. Later in the book Wang Lung’s daughter becomes mentally ill because of the lack of nutrients. Afterwards, Wang Lung and his family become extremely desperate for food which results in Wang Lung’s second son stealing meat from a butcher so that the family may survive. Soon after Wang Lung’s second son stole meat Wang Lung changes from a hard working person to salvaging the rich’s houses for treasures. Even though we may fall down to the bottom like Wang Lung people can rise up again. Towards the end of the novel Wang Lung comes back to the north to re-establish his original life in the north. Wang Lung is motivated to live like the rich because of all of the money that he stole for the rich man’s house in the South. With all the money that Wang Lung has he is able to send his two sons to school to become scholars. Wang Lung sends his son to school in his mind wanting his two son to help Wang Lung trade with other people. Wang Lung is also able to buy more land to expand his fields which results Wang getting richer and richer. With all of Wang Lung's money he is able to expand his house, and is able to live like the rich in leisure.
