Wang Lung and his family go on a journey through satisfying times and awful times. The novel The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is an excellent example of how life is full of surprises. In people’s life, they go through many obstacles to achieve where they want to go. Wang Lund, the main character that has to survive in the world as an underprivileged farmer in China who rises to become a wealthy landowner. Wang Lund is married to O-Lan a kitchen servant of the House of Hwang. O-Lan helps Wang Lung throughout his journey to the end of her life. Wang Lung goes through many challenges, just like the majority of the people do all around the world.

Later in the novel Wang Lung and his family run into an obstacle in the road. A famine sweeps through the majority of northern China because of the shortage of water. Wang Lung and his family try to endure the hardships of the famine, but are forced to travel south to try to survive. In the south Wang Lung tries to survive with the many challenges in the south. Some of the challenges that Wang Lung faces are finding food, trying to work, and providing for his family. Wang Lung and his family become extremely desperate for food that Wang Lung’s second son is willing to steal meat from a butcher so that the family may survive. Soon after Wang Lung’s second son stole meat Wang Lung changes from a hard working person to salvaging the rich’s houses for money.In this part of the novel Wang Lung and his family run into a obstacle in the road likes in parts our lives. Even though we may fall down to the bottom like Wang Lung people can rise up again. Towards the end of the novel Wang Lung comes back to the north to re-establish his original life in the north. Wang Lung is motivated to live like the rich because of all of the money that he stole for the rich man’s house in the South. With all the money that Wang Lung has he is able to send his two sons to school to become scholars, buy more land to expand his fields, expand his house, and is able to live like the rich in leisure.
