Walter Van Tilburg Clark's Portable Phonograph

Winter in Vancouver is easy, as there are very few snow days, as well as days when the temperature is below zero. If the winters in Vancouver are difficult for some, a nuclear winter would be much more challenging. Nuclear winters are hard for the people that survive because it is depressing, dangerous, and cold. The short story “Portable Phonograph” by Walter Van Tilburg Clark shows what it is like living through a nuclear winter through a man’s eyes. It explains how the man survives, and the lifestyle. Although it is important to know what others have gone through (or going through) it is also important to know how to survive a nuclear winter. People’s needs can be very strong, and when not satisfied, it can lead to a terrible outcome, ““I want paper to write on” he said “ And there is none” (Clark, 1941, p.179) When a feeling is so strong for wanting something, and it cannot be fulfilled, is leads to thinking that there is not any hope left, which leads to severe depression, and in a time of a nuclear winter, it makes it far more depressing as no one is around to comfort, or help. To survive a nuclear winter many supplies are needed such as UV protection, “we would need to deal with this excess radiation, which in high amounts can cause skin cancer and eye problems” (Roberts, 2007, p.1). If not having the proper supplies leads to death, many people would become very depressed because there isn’t enough money or supplies for every single person to stay protected in the case of a nuclear winter. Thus during a nuclear winter it is important to have the proper supplies, and to know that it will be difficult and depressing, but to keep pushing
