Learn D Astronomer Symbolism

We watch nature on a tv screen or a small phone but, we do not realize the beauty of nature until we see it in person. In Walt Whitman’s short poem, “When I heard the Learn’d Astronomer” he describes how seeing something on a projector is nothing compared to experiencing it for yourself. This can relate to anything from how watching sports can be cool but playing sports is a lot more enjoyable. Another example that happened to me was when I went snorkeling in Hawaii, online I would see videos of fishes in the ocean but never thought much about it until I experienced it for myself and realized how many different types of fish there was and how memorizing all the different colors and patterns were. I went there this past summer with fourteen …show more content…
So first we had to rent our snorkeling gear that isn't too expensive. I was not nervous of swimming around but what I was nervous about were the fishes. But before I got to go out in the deeper part of the bay with the cooler looking fishes I had to practice swimming around with the snorkel gear on. I was very confused on why sometimes when I would breath in the air would stop and make me start suffocating. But my uncle told me that I needed to try to keep my head up and not look down too much because the breathing tube would block the airway so if you went too far down it wouldn’t let the water in and just close the tube. Then once I got the hang of swimming and breathing properly my uncle took me out into the deeper ocean and seeing all the beautiful fish. I have seen fishes like the ones I saw on tv before but there is something about seeing it in person that really makes you appreciate what life has given you like the fishes. In person you get to notice the little details you do not get to see on a screen at home. For example like how every fish is unique in its own way from the pattern to how it swims. The highlight of snorkeling was when I got to see a giant sea turtle. When I first saw it I thought it was a shark creeping up on me. The turtle was probably the size of a five year old kid. As it swam past me it felt like it was slow motion and I remember the different shades of green on the turtle's back. And how while it was swimming away it looked like it was waving bye to

In “The World Is All That Is The Case” by Lee Seigel, he argues that although the internet and technologies can have great benefits, its downside cannot be denied. The downside of the internet is that it blurs the line between a fantasy world and real life. The internet is encouraging people to create independent worlds for each other that make it even harder to simply be human and be aware of the world. Technologies are assimilating human existence to an economic model which has nothing to do with being human. It does not include human needs, desires, and experiences.…

Advancements in technology have produced a world in which one is constantly looking at images or watching a video. Whether for enjoyment or to fill a void caused by boredom, many people scroll through their phones aimlessly viewing a multitude of images. Maggie Nelson discusses these notions of spectating in her narrative titled “Great to Watch,” where she presents two different views of what “spectating” really means. She first presents it as an action that provides a false sense of empowerment where one passively views by means of constant scrolling. Later she claims that active spectating gives one a mechanism to become aware of both themselves and the environment.…

If you think about each and every aspect of the nature of our world, it is truly indescribable. Think about how many blades of grass there are just in a small field or how animals instinctually know how to survive and work together. The world around us is extraordinary, but, unfortunately, in today’s society, most of us do not even bother to look up and take it in. We are all too self-absorbed and will not even take the time to put down our technology and appreciate the scenery outside. One day during the pouring rain, I took the time to sit by a window and observe the raindrops glide down my window and the squirrels run to take shelter from the rain.…

After reading both Kelle Lasn’s and Richard Louv’s pieces on how humans have become distant from nature, I became very upset with myself. When I was younger I loved spending time outside. Whether I was playing sports with the neighborhood kids, helping my grandfather with his garden or talking walks in the park near my house, I realized that I do not spend nearly as much time outside as I used to. With technology constantly being invented and reinvented, video games, television shows and phones are just a few of the technological things that steal most of the joy that nature used to bring to people. As a kid, I begged to spend more time outside even though it was dinner time or the sun had set hours before.…

It was a hot summer, sunny day in Florida usually like most others but today was special. I was going deep-sea fishing for the very first time, my mom told me to put on a lot of sunscreens, so I don’t get sunburn. My family and I got dressed and got into the car and made our way for Pompano Beach pier, where the charter boat would be leaving from. We all packed into the boat like a can of sardens, the captain started the engine and we looked over at the glistening deep blue ocean, the seas where calm, when we arrived at the fishing spot the mates gave us fishing poles and told us to drop the baits in the water, a few seconds later the rod is bent over and the line is screeching like crazy, my parents and the captain start yelling at me to reel…

Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a lifeguard. My dad was a lifeguard when he was a teenager and he said it was one of the best jobs of his life. He always talked about how fun it was to sit in the bright, warm sun all day and get paid to get a golden tan. In my 9th grade year my 15 year old self was asked by the pool manager of my neighborhood pool if I would like to work, and who could pass up this great opportunity. I signed up for the lifeguard class…

I felt a tap on my back, and jumped, as the diving instructor looked at me questioning, “Well, what are you waiting for? Aren't you coming?” In the single most courageous moment of my life so far, without hesitation, I answered, “Yes!” I pulled on my wet suit, which was still freezing from the previous dive that day, grabbed my vest, with an air tank and regulator, strapped on goggles and headed to the edge of the boat. The dive instructor handed me a flashlight, and with a big smile on his face said, “Lets go!”…

We lock ourselves in boxes with nothing but a screen with incredible lights that someone seems to make us be angry, be sad, and be happy.
