As a child, Disney and his brothers, Roy, Herbert and Raymond, did not have a good rapport with their father Elias. This strained relationship compelled three of the four boys to seek a way out of the home as early as possible. Because of the broken exchange, with his father, Walt Disney begin drawing and painting which lead to him selling these pictures to friends and neighbors. He used this as a means of creating “his own little fantasy world where life was always beautiful, people were always happy, and most important, he was always in control” (“Walter Elais Disney”). Due to the difficulties at home and, as his life progressed Walt experienced important lessons and situations, which prepared him for his later life. In light of the recent bankruptcy, Disney believed others were better at animation than he was and therefore maybe he would be better suited for acting. Disney came face to face with an opportunity. Walt and his brother, Roy, came to realize there were no other animators headquartered in Hollywood, California. The lack of any competition in the area brought about the opportunity to start up The Walt Disney Company (Kober). With the new studio up and running and every cent the two brothers had invested into the company, Walt Disney started work on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Unfortunately, copyright issues became a threat to Disney. All the hard work on Oswald was seized from him, when the copyright was found to be put in the distributor’s name and not in Disney’s. This error gave Disney no rights to the work. Beyond not holding ownership of the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, most of those who worked for him committed to work for the distributor. Basically, Walt's whole team, with the exception of one of his oldest friends Ub Iwerks, was appropriated from him. From that point on Disney was diligent in making sure all his work was copyrighted as his own (“Walter Elias Disney”).
