You know him as the father of Mickey Mouse, the creator of the happiest place on earth, the mastermind behind timeless classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, Snow White, Fantasia, and much more. This remarkable man is none other than Walter Elias Disney.
Born on December 5th, 1901 to Elias and Flora Call Disney, Walt (as he preferred to be called) was one of five children. After Walt was born, his family moved to Marceline, Missouri where he spent most of his childhood. Mickey made his first appearance in the movie industry in the cartoon, Steamboat Willie, which was the first cartoon in the world that was produced with sound. Walt strived to achieve bigger and greater things. His perseverance and determination were limitless.
In 1937, the first full-length animated musical, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, made its debut on the big screen. More classics such as Pinocchio and Fantasia were steadily produced in the five years after Snow White came out. Then, in 1955, Disneyland Park opened in Florida. Disney’s dream of having a family-friendly theme park for a person of any age or type had finally come true.
Walt Disney can easily be called one of the most influential figures in all of American history. His legacy left a lasting impression on American culture. His films, animations, comic strips, documentaries, songs, and theme parks shaped the way the entertainment industry is seen even today. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson himself. Walt and his brother, Roy, played essential roles in the creation of the California Institute of the Arts in 1961. The institute was a college-level professional school of all the creative and performing arts. To establish the school was one of Disney’s biggest aspirations as he hoped to provide a place to develop young peoples’ talents. Just before his passing, Disney returned to his hometown, Marceline, a few more times to attend the inauguration of the Walt Disney Municipal Park and Pool and the Walt Disney Elementary School.
