Walt Disney had a dream of a place in which parents and their children could do things together and enjoy time spent with one another. His dreams were becoming more extensive the more he was thinking about this dreamland. He was imagining characters walking around talking and interacting with those who came to Disney. These thoughts were occurring to him as he was at an amusement parking sitting while his daughters were playing. Walt never wanted his amusement park to be like the typical one. He once said “What this country really needs is an amusement park that families can take their children to. Walt had sent 6,000 invitations to studio workers, construction workers, press and officials of company sponsors (Berman). So many counter fit tickets were made. 11,000 people were expected to be at opening day and half way through the day 28,000 people had come (Disneyland Opens). Before the all the people got there they had an opening day parade and a live special on ABC. The broadcast was called Dateline Disneyland. Some of the people who helped host this 90 minute special were Art Linkletter, Ronald Regan, and Bob Cummings (The Grand Opening of Disneyland). At the time this was the biggest and most complex broadcast with 24 separate cameras recording at once. On opening day he couldn’t believe his dream had come true. Right as everyone entered the park a sign had read” To all who come to this happy place: Welcome- Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past…And here youth may savor the challenge and the promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America… with the hope that will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world” (Berman). That sign gave an amazing example of what Disneyland is actually about. Over the years Disneyland has changed so much, yet the framework of the ideas are still the same.
