In the 1960’s, Sam Walton started up his own store in Bentonville, Arkansas and it was quite successful. He was still not entirely satisfied, he still had that dream to convert his small business into a huge enterprise to give the people a great shopping experience as if they lived in the big city. Sam also wanted to give back to the people in a way that would make them feel happy, and that way was to make his merchandise more affordable to the people. Sam Walton, followed his vision and ran with it, during the 1970’s Wal-Mart was growing fast, having over 44 million dollars in sales annually. They were competing with Sears, JC penny’s, and K-Mart. As you can remember, Sears was the number one store beating all the stores in annual sales in the billions. Sam Walton was not finished, he had a new vision. A vision that would later turn into one of the biggest money makers in the United States and international. Sam always took managers from local stores and flew them out to walk into competitor stores. He would always walk around the stores and look at what they were doing that was working well instead of what they were doing bad. Sam had walked into a ware house that was not appealing from the outside, the floors were concrete and the ceilings were covered in pipes just like a warehouse. He thought it was a brilliant idea to charge for a membership but yet get a low price and more for your money. He figured this was a great idea for small businesses.
