Sustainability measures are being increasingly adopted by large MNCs. These measures help reduce the company’s impact on environment and at the same time improve the company’s profitability. Some examples include GE’s ecoimagination, Nike Better World, Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, Marks & Spencer’s Plan A and Wal-Mart’s Sustainability Index. Wal-Mart’s sustainability index incorporates product information from the first 18 supplier groups (out of their 100 largest merchandise groups). The initial push was for US stores suppliers which has been implemented globally now. It is a tool for or product designers, manufacturers, suppliers and sustainability experts looking for information on materials, energy, water, social and climate impacts throughout the product life cycle. Wal-Mart is also implementing Earthster2 Turbo tool pilot program. This will help companies understand where their largest environmental impacts are in their product design and manufacturing processes and how to find more sustainable alternatives. Easthster is the first open source software that measures and manages a products social and environmental impact throughout the supply chain. The tool has in built recommendations engine, which draws on environmental and climate databases and recommends user-specific options for cost-effective improvements of environmental impacts. Social impacts are also measured through Social Hotspots Database which is offered only by
