Walmart Observation Report

Decent Essays
Walking into the toy section of Walmart I noticed two things, the first one was that there were different isles for boys and girls toys. Second was the fact that the boys isle had more dark colors such as blue, black, and red while as the girls were more of pinks and bright colors. Once I had started to look at these isles I noticed a lot of the toys are in fact gendered.
I noticed that the girls isle has babies, lots and lots of baby dolls which should suggest that little girls are suppose to grow up to be mothers and take care of their babies. There were also lots of kitchen sets/dining ware that could be used to “make meals” like the easy bake oven for example. Making it seem as though girls are suppose to grow up cooking in their house

Chapter 4 opens with the dilemma that Walmart faced, as a second generation of workers began to be hired to fill jobs due to expansion of stores and the high turnover of older works. (Lichtenstein 112-113). Increases in the federal mandated minimum wage, precipitated a new strategy for Sam Walton and Walmart, whose insatiable quest for maintaining and increasing profits led to a management template that controlled all aspects of employee wages, benefits, and overtime hours. (Lichtenstein 112-116). Walton’s drive to have cheap labor led to an employee structure minimizes the number of managers in each store, created a profit sharing system in lieu of a pension plan, and a scheme to circumvent the Minimum Wage Law, by setting up small stores…

Are toy sections in stores specified to a specific gender? The store that I visited was Target. They had toys for a variety of children for instance, toddlers, boys, and girls. However, the toy section wasn’t conjoined; in fact, it was separated by gender. The toy section in Target has a visible gender line between the toys.…

The first thing I noticed as I began approaching the aisles was that there were two aisles painted pink, two aisles painted blue, and one aisle painted green and yellow. The pink aisles screamed femininity. They were filled with fashion dolls, gaudy purses, vacuum cleaners, kitchenette sets, pink feather boas, you name it. The aisles painted blue contained, action figures, swords, wrestling belts, hammers, construction hats, Nerf™ balls, basketballs, anything asserting toughness. The last aisle painted green and yellow was filled with toys targeted to learning, development and education such as leapfrog readers and interactive games.…

Fish from Walmart are not properly cared for at the store, and the uneducated employees give out the wrong information. I am writing to express deep concern about the living conditions of all the fish in your store, mainly focusing on betta fish. At the store, the betta fish are stored in small containers no bigger than a small tissue box. In my experience, the water is dirty and the fish contained in the bowls are obviously distressed. I have witnessed frighteningly filthy water, with the fish inside slumped at the bottom of the container, dead.…

Secondly, how poorly Walmart workers are treated is proof enough that the company is bad for America. Walmart is known to take advantage of their employees by offering them low wages, no overtime, poor health care, and are disrespectful of employees race along with gender. This corporation has been proven to guilt workers into working more for no pay leaving the employee with little to no money monthly. They simply tell the employees that they do not know what they are going to do because of the lack of staff and the amount of work they have to do; they often infer that the worker should stay on duty no matter what time there shift ends in order to get the job done without pay. Many workers had gone in on days off in order to get work done…

Walmart as a Bureaucracy Bureaucracies have increased and are quickly infiltrating almost every area of life in the Western Hemisphere. From the city government to the military, bureaucracy provides an important form of social organization. In fact, referencing the federal bureaucracy, The Washington Post states, “Our carefully constructed system of checks and balances is being negated by the rise of a fourth branch, an administrative state of sprawling departments and agencies that govern with increasing autonomy and decreasing transparency” (Turley, 2013). A bureaucracy can be a large formal organization, but regardless of its size, it often emphasizes memos and reports, sometimes leading people to believe that the bureaucracy does not care…

On Saturday October 5, 2015, I approach the bench at Walmart in Dumfries, Virginia. Before I sat down on the bench I saw a little girl running towards her mother asking for a Slurpee from Subway that’s located inside Walmart. I heard the little girl mother said” Wait a minute Isabell, I need to put these groceries in the car first”. I was located at the front entrance on the left side of the building. I selected this particular place because it’s a busy place to shop and get to see all activities from different strangers.…

Gender is obviously the state of being male or female. That being said, lately gender is not just being either male or female. It has grown to consume the “normal” social roles that are associated with it. Men and women follow the gender norms, or they are doomed to social ostracization. From an early age, boys and girls are made to assume their gender roles, mainly in the toys that they play with.…
