In 1962 Sam Walton started Walmart with a single brick and mortar discount store. He had a simple idea of selling more for less. The first Walmart was opened in Roger Arkansas and instantly became a success. They were different and stood out from the typical discount store, by selling primarily American made products and operating in smaller towns vs. big cities. Walmart was the first chain to emphasize logistic by ensuring all stores were a day’s drive from the company’s regional warehouses ((Myers, 2017). By 1967, there were 24 stores in operation with net income of $13 million in sales. Finally in 1972, Walmart became a listed company on the New York Stock Exchange under stock symbol WMT (Walmart, n.d).
