Walking Point Poem Analysis

“Walking Point”, is a poem published in the Iowa Review written by Terry Hertzler. While flipping through the journal, the poem did not seem interesting at all but I decided to read it anyway. The poem is a free verse poem that consists of seven tercets. The whole first stanza focuses on describing a young child. When I first read the first stanza, I thought that the poem would be about a young boy going on a walk or an adventure given that there is a whole stanza focused on him, and that the title talks about a walk. I thought it was interesting that it mentioned his race as if it were significant to the whole poem. As soon as I saw the word Vietnamese, I automatically subconsciously thought of the Vietnam War. The first stanza also serves as imagery. Through it, I imagine a young malnourished darker skinned Asian looking boy who is standing in a wooded area with a fearful and anguished face. I also imagine that he is very dirty and that his flip flops are very old and probably do not fit anymore. I realized that my hunch that this poem was about the Vietnam War was right when it alluded to the black pajama looking outfits that Vietnamese soldiers typically wore during the war. The second stanza goes from the boy’s physical appearance to his facial expressions. The poem uses a cliché statement that the boy is …show more content…
This shows that the boy has been forced to participate in the war, because when confronted by the enemy, he cowers and runs like an innocent child that is fearing for his life. However, the American soldier, presumably a white male adult, prepares to kill the boy instantly. However, he hesitates, and he takes a second to think about what he is about to do. He tries to suppress his emotions and tells himself to just do it. I believe that this man realized in that moment, that he has been taking innocent lives and couldn’t bring himself to kill someone that he knows is

This poem is just what it sounds like, it is about the commitment of a young man to the war and his death while fighting as a ball turret gunner. After his death he narrates his time in the war and from the very first line of the poem he says, “From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State”(92). When we read this line we cannot help but imagine the lifeless body of a man that once wanted nothing more than to fight for his country. As we think about this we also start to wonder about our government and rethink everything that we felt in reading the previous poem. Why would a man possibly volunteer to fight in a war, much less as a ball turret gunner for a government that was truly horrible.…

To many, the words “Individual” and “Community” seem to oppose each other. However, the word individual is derived from the Latin root individuum meaning “an atom, indivisible particle” which shows how a true community is able to function — as one. Slam Poetry, Flag Football, and Experiential Learning all represent a personal connection between an individual and their community. When a slam poet takes the stage, whether it be in front of a thousand people or in front of one person, and clutches a microphone they become the voice of a community.…

In a civilization aimed at peace and freedom in life, one may find it astonishing to see how prominent war has been in the history of the human race. War, in its simplest form, is fighting- a practice sustained by humans for centuries. In today's society, fighting is glamorized and celebrated, everywhere from the Call of Duty games to the MMA and boxing leagues. However, war and fighting are only glamorized by the people who have not truly experienced them- a point well illustrated by author Ambrose Bierce. In his story "Chickamauga", Ambrose Bierce creates tension between the beliefs of the narrator and of the child, while including vital symbols, to display how the glamorization of war and fighting does not exist in people who have experienced…

The poem started out with the speaker started off with a cautious and intimidated tone. The speaker also made contrast between the ethnic groups and how she feels about her fellow African American counterpart. The speaker give best displayed this when they using the imagery to convey her thoughts. For instance, when talking about his clothing and appearance they said, “He had the casual look of a mugger, alert under hooded lids,” From there it’s a bit clear why the speaker felt intimidated and nervous because of the appearance and how it made her feel. Another way the speaker displayed his insight she said, “I look at his raw face, he looks at my fur coat, and don’t know if I am in his power,” The speaker now shows she feel he is a imminent…

Standing before you, you see a child. Like many children, they’re young and small, about ten or younger. But you should mind the ak47 they have propped on their shoulder and their lifeless eyes that have witnessed several deaths of both friend and foe, comrade, and enemy. The only happiness these eyes have seen, is the adrenaline rush from the witnessed crossfire, and the drugs running through their systems, and behind those eyes : a mind of a hardened soldier. Here in the united states children live a rather blessed life, few of them grow up to know extreme violence.…

The song that I chose is “the climb”, by Miley Cyrus, the reason I chose this song is because when I was younger I would always go around the house singing this song without realizing the strong meaning behind it. There is many literary devices in “The Climb” one of them is mountain that she is climbing, it is a symbol for life barriers. Another literally device that is used is personification, when Cyrus says “but there’s a voice inside my head saying you’ll never reach it”. In addition the line “there’s always gonna be another mountain, im always gonna wanna make it move”, is a metaphor for having to deal with problems that occur in life. The climb does not have a rhyme scheme it is a free verse.…

Imagine living in a world of oppression, a world in which people deny others their food, their water, their identity, and ultimately their right of life. Imagine living in a world of starvation, a world in which people fight their own family members over crumbs of bread. Imagine living in a world constantly filled with horror, a world in which death can strike at any moment. And finally, imagine that, at a point in history, this world did, in fact, exist. It shows how these young men have been victimized by an ideology that some individuals still carry and believe. People do not realize what soldiers have to endure in battle. Additionally, it shows the remarkable connection that the soldiers have with one another. Soldiers fight for the same ideals and with the same passion for the sake of their land and glory. Of course, there is a price for this glory—destruction and loss of lives.…

Copenhagen’s Nyhavn boasts one of the most picturesque places on Earth; colorful buildings line the canal, offering restaurants, bars, and cafes. But in crafting Nyhavn, we lost the beauty of the natural surroundings, for the buildings obstruct the canal from afar, and their tall facades curtain any form of nature except the sky directly above. Gary Snyder’s 1996 poem “Covers the Ground” focuses on similar environmental issues, juxtaposing man-made structures with nature. In the poem, imagery reveals how man-made structures overpower nature in order to criticize the loss of wilderness to make room for further development. Descriptions of size highlight how man-made structures cover nature in order to condemn the erosion of the environment due to manufactured objects.…
