Walker Recital Hall Performance Review Essay

Improved Essays
On April 26th of this year I attended a faculty recital in the Walker Recital Hall. The recital featured the Presque Isle Saxophone Quartet with Allen Zurcher, Bethany Dressler, Rebecca Wunch, and Scott Meier. The hall was not fully filled with spectators, however, attendees were very supportive and enthusiastic about the artists. The performance consisted of the 20th and 21st century music pieces, which was something I did not expect. To surprise this performance did not take long time and was over in about hour and 15 minutes. Despite that, artists were able to nicely perform their music. The four of them set in a small semi circle which allowed to make eye contact as well as sense of rhythmic balance. All of them expressed great passion and …show more content…
The audience was very diverse, representing people from different walks of life. I noticed many university students and some older people as well. I believe that quartet's familiarity in Erie contributed to these outside he school spectators. People seemed engaged and interested in artists and their musical art form. Some students were not so attentive, but that did not spoil this great performance. Surprisingly the intermission arrived quiet soon and we were allowed to stretch our legs. Personally, the second half of their performance was more appealing to me. Mainly because the last piece they played was fairly recent (2005), and I was able to associate to something I have heard before. To me, it had a beat and a rhythm, which I greatly enjoyed. Also, it had a nice upbeat tempo, that most definitely made me clap along it. I had no prior knowledge or experience with saxophones or these kind of performances, but I was nicely surprised when I heard the whole thing. Artists were very engaged in their, so was the audience. There were some solo parts as well, and to me, that gave an extra boost to this whole experience. I usually do not listen to this music, and probably

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

The composition I liked least was about the fifth piece they played. It started off with a drum (barony) kind of offbeat to me and follows with the band chiming in. It was like a combo of Italian and classical music put together which did not feel like a good mixture. To me hip hop and Irish dancing isn’t a good form of…

The second Musician I want to talk about would be Michael Lington during the live Jazz Concert. Michael Lington is the Sax player. He is a Danish- American contemporary Saxophonist , producer, songwriter, recording artist and a purveyor of soul and contemporary Jazz. I personally love the way how the concert went, even though I’m not in the actual performance, but I still felt how excited the audiences was during the concert. During the Concert the music was played very soft and it did not have anything like the big band or African influence kind of characteristics.…

When i looked at the program i thought that i would be more intrigued because i would want to find some of the pieces they played, and maybe call out where they missed a beat or something. I thought I would be pretty solid on the Beethoven pieces. Sadly I did not know one piece they played. Also, it seemed like one hour would pass, until we could clap and i didn't really like that. I think that’s another reason they lost my attention, it was just too long, and soon, everything started to sound like one piece.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

Extra Credit On September 30th I attended my second SWIC Music Recital at the Schmidt Art Center. The venue for the afternoon recital was held in the same gallery room as my first experience. The rooms plain walls were adorned with art of varying mediums, in the front of the hall sat a white grand piano on parquet floors, played by Professor Gail Long, the only accompaniment for the day’s performers. This recital difference from the first event was rather than professors performing for the students it was students playing for a group of 50 of their peers and professors.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…

On November 19th I went to New Dorp high school as I do every year to watch Sing. Sing is a performance the school puts on each year. The students are divided into two teams: SeniorSoph, which consist of all the seniors and sophomores that want to be involved, and JuniorFresh, which are all the juniors and freshman involved. Both teams have to come up with an original play that the director writes him or herself and they then compete to see who will win that year. The shows are judged off multiple categories.…

On June fifteenth I traveled to view the unique Phantasmagoria play performed at 7 Stages located in Little Five Points. The show incorporated a number of folktales, fairytales, plays aka “The Wickedest Tales of All”, and stories with each cast member playing a different role each time. The story that stood out the most to me was by the great Charles Dickens called A Madman’s Manuscript. The story grasped my attention because the cast allowed for the audience to be apart of this story. We were allowed to sing along with them and dance.…
