San Francisco is one of the country’s most expensive cities to live. Its high standard of living only increases as the years go by because of the ongoing gentrification. This gentrification transformed the city into being a place for those of middle class or higher and caused struggle for low-income families. By creating the piece, Victorion, Sirron Norris strives to visually express gentrification going on in the Mission District within terms of marginalized groups within Western societies through the use of text, exhibiting a futuristic style, and the exaggeration of scale. Sirron Norris’ Victorion is located in Balmy Alley of San Francisco’s Mission District amongst other ever-changing Chicano murals.…
Throughout the film, the tech industry is portrayed as an invading monster causing all sorts of problems to the city of San Francisco. It has had a major influence on many of the issues the city is experiencing, whether it is…
A global trend that seems to impact every country in the world one way or another seems to be urbanization. Worldwide the idea of living in a big booming is becoming more and more popular. Cities mainly appeal to people as social, commercial, and political hubs. Their allure also comes from the unique culture that every city has. Although seeming glamorous, there is a dark side of urban life.…

Through all the cities we have analyzed are completely separate from each other, they all have something similar about them. The first way they are connected is through gentrification, as people with money begin to slide into places, like Las Cruces, and sprucing it up by bringing money through tourism with certain attractions. One of the most promising pieces of the gentrification of in Las Cruces is Richard Branson’s Spaceport America, “the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport” (Ausherman). Another key part to the puzzle is that this venture is paid for with “millions of taxpayer dollars” (Ausherman), showing that the people around Las Cruces are the ones funding the dreams of one. Branson has this idea of sending people into…
Sex in San Francisco Social deviance and San Francisco go together like peanut butter and jelly. From the California Gold Rush to current social justice movements, the city has offered a place to foster new ideas and shelter outcasts. In a time where men dominated the public sphere, madams of the Barbary Coast were still able to have financial agency. Later down the line in the 1960’s, San Francisco provided a platform to reanalyze conventional norms in a time of great political tension.…
The introduction to the film includes scenes of monsters destroying the city, buildings collapsing, people fleeing and shouting in terror are shown as Pelosi states the tech invasion has tarnished San Francisco’s spirit of anti-materialism and freedom. By equating the technology industry to these chaotic scenes Pelosi vilifies them and portrays their presence as destructive. As a result, the viewer is pushed to side with Pelosi and seriously consider what’s being claimed. Next, Salon.com’s cofounder states that San Francisco has the fastest growing inequality in the United states and that if it’s not addressed will drive out artists, writers and musicians he describes as “the people who made this city the attractive magnet that it is.” which will make it a “bland, monotonous, tech oriented city.”.…
In her work, “Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128,” Annalee Saxenian observes the economic development of two very distinct regions, as aforementioned in the title, Silicon Valley and Route 128. Although, much of domestic economic growth can be witnessed at the regional level; the course of economic development is as distinct as the regions themselves. It’s no secret that Silicon Valley turned out to be the more successful of the two. With the use of decades-worth of evidence, Saxenian answers the why and how of the Valley’s progression. Saxenian first draws a comparison between the two communities.…
The two cities I chose to report on are Downey and South Gate. The reasons I chose these cities are I graduated from Downey High School and I grew up in the city of South Gate. From personal experience, I know that they are similar in many ways but also differ in terms of their economy just by observing the cities. This report will discuss the economic development goals of the two cities with emphasis on how they compare and contrast to one another and will determine the desirability of living in each city. To begin, I find it easiest to compare the cities’ similarities.…
I have briefly discussed urban growth and its affect on the country’s economy and development. I got all the information from Google and from the case study which was on Muscat. The goal of this assignment was to understand what actually urbanization is and why people migrate from rural to urban areas as well as…
One can describe the city in many different ways. Authors Louis Wirth and Georg Simmel suggest that the city, and the basis of our social order in the urban world can be symbolized as the traffic signal, the uniform and the clock. The traffic signal and the clock describe how members of society are constantly working together with individuals who have no sentimental and emotional ties with each other, and how this creates a sense of competition and fighting to expand one’s power or status, and mutual exploitation. The necessary frequent movement of the large population in a high capacity habitat causes friction and irritation. Nervous tensions which derive from such personal frustrations are enhanced by the rapid tempo and the complicated technology under which life in dense areas must be lived.…
However, urbanization brings challenge; especially in the developing countries in terms of improving the urban environment and the living condition. Urbanization leads to the emergence of commercial and industrial activities within the area but the historic city areas, having failed to keep pace with the requirements of the modern economy, start to deteriorate. While historic cities area indentitarian, core to the city both historically and geographically, they are also central to many…
In order to unravel human behaviour in society, cultural sociology focuses on groups to which individuals belong. While the biggest group is society itself, there are smaller groups as well and city and culture figure significantly among them. Thus, cultural sociology is interested in examining not just the characteristics of a particular culture but also how it figures in the entangled matrix of factors influencing complex human social behaviour. Both the texts illustrate how the matrix of urbanism and culture shape and influence the lives of…
Saskia Sassen begins by highlighting the ‘global' definition of a global city in a contemporary period. Her key concept of the global city places an emphasis on the system of information and capital. Cities are major parts of a bigger picture which is the systems of information and money. Financial institutions, consulting firms, accounting firms, law firms, and media organizations are all specialized economic businesses that rely on the flow of information and wealth throughout a city. Sassen points out that this flow is not restricted to boundaries or regulation; emphasizing the difference from the way great cities were structured centuries ago.…
