Lewiston is where Sal's mom went, where she died, and where she was buried. On page 102, we are told why Sal's mom left. On the road trip, Sal's grandma, Gram, gets hospitalized, she dies, and Sal tells the story of Phoebe. Gram gets hospitalized twice on the way to Lewiston, first in Chamberlin, South Dakota. On pages 88 and 89 Gram gets bitten by a snake. "'It's a poisonous one, isn't it?' The snake slithered and wriggled, straining toward the water. 'I do believe it has had a snack out of my leg.' … Gram spent the night in the hospital." She was hospitalized again on page 243. "At Coeur d'Alene, we went straight to the hospital … The doctors said Gram had had a stroke." Later, on page 258, we are told Gram died. "'I am sorry to say that our gooseberry died at three o'clock this morning.'" Because Gram was one of the main characters in Walk Two Moons, her death was a big deal to the plot. On page eight, Sal started to tell the story of Phoebe, "And that is how I happened to suspend my tree prayers and tell them about Phoebe, her disappearing mother, and the lunatic."
