I am sure you have heard of Wal-Mart before, whether from a magazine you read, a commercial you saw on TV, on the side of the road, etc. Wal-Mart is a great place to go for your shopping needs. They have things ranging from electronics, household items, paint, clothing, guns, hunting and fishing equipment, grocery items, tire shop, clinic, photography store, nail salon, etc. Wal-Mart is Americas largest employer with over 1.4 million employees (Amadeo). This has both positive and negative effects on our society as a whole. In this paper, I will be exploring the functions, conflicts, and the types of interactions that occur within the Wal-Mart corporation as a whole. I went to my local Wal-Mart to investigate these three things.

Wal-Mart has many functions as well as dysfunctions whether they are personal, manifest, or latent. The functions of Wal-Mart for society as a whole vary. When walking around Wal-Mart, you notice all of the things Wal-Mart has to offer as I stated earlier. The manifest functions of Wal-Mart is to supply customers with the everyday things they need such as food, clothing, household appliances, etc at a very cheap price. Wal-Mart is there to help save people lots of money. According to Kerry Ferris and Jill Stein, a manifest function is, “the obvious, intended functions of a social structure for the social system” (Ferris 24).
