Can you imagine waking up in the morning with no heater or air conditioning, no lamps or electronic light and also the worst of all no cell service? You would think to yourself, how am I going to survive. Well, you will survive but things that are as simple as making time to go to the grocery store and turning up the heater when you are cold will be a lot more difficult and time-consuming. For example, getting food for the week was not going to the store and putting your food in the refrigerator or freezer, you had to go to the farm on a horse-drawn carriage. Also, they could not buy eggs, milk, or cheese for a week's worth. They didn't have a place to store it, so no refrigerator or freezer. Now, we can jump in the car and go buy groceries

As he was searching for a job one day around 1942 he overheard someone talking about this Bracero program which intrigued him. He found out that it was a program where he could be immigrated out to work in the United States.…

In the city, you either paid your electric, paid for coal, or froze all winter long in your house. In the country, they could take the corn husks that some of the farmers grew to burn those. Many people in the city did not even have any way of attempting to warm themselves because they had lost their jobs, lost their ability to pay rent, and had been thrown to the curb. The Great Depression caused millions of people to become homeless, especially in the cities. It was worse for the cities because while the farmers could occasionally go hunting, the city dwellers had to dig through garbage to get food.…

For example, many families lived on the edge of starvation. Most families had many members to help farm the land, but during poor crop years there was not enough food to feed the whole family. This caused many deaths in the frontier. Diseases and accidents were a common occurrence in the West and with little to no doctors, many lives were lost. Durkheimian Analysis of Heat Wave Six hundred and fifty-eight. This is the number of American citizens who suffer from heat-related deaths each year.1 To put that into perspective, it is coincidentally the exact number of students suffering in Virginia Tech’s air-condition-lacking Slusher Residence Hall.2 During the summer of 1995, Chicago was hit with one of the deadliest heat waves on record. In the nine-day span of July 12 to 20, more than seven-hundred weather-related deaths were recorded.3 Through research for his 2002 book, Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, Eric Klinenberg discovered a direct connection between a neighborhood’s poverty level and heat-related body count.4 This realization opens the door for an even greater…
